Using ThreatMap

What area does ThreatMap show?

Everyone registered within 5 miles of you, nearest first. To look somewhere else, pan the map and tap Search this area. Coverage is the 50 US states; territories like Puerto Rico and Guam aren't included yet.

What do the pins and tags mean?

Each red pin is a registered address. A pin with an exclamation mark is the highest tier or risk level the state assigns (High). Moderate and Low follow the state's own scheme.

Many states, California included, don't publish a tier, so those people have no tag.

The app says “Location is off”.

Open the iPhone Settings app, scroll to ThreatMap, tap Location and choose While Using the App. Without location you can still pan the map and search any area.

Why does it say “Showing your last area”?

Either you're outside the 50 states, or you've reached the fair-use limit on searching new areas. The limit works over a rolling 72 hours and lifts on its own. Areas you've already searched keep working in the meantime.

What does “Partial results” mean?

A state registry didn't respond fully when that area was searched, so some people may be missing. Check the official state registry for a complete list.

Subscription and billing

How do I cancel my subscription?

Open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and choose ThreatMap. Or go to apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions. Deleting the app doesn't cancel it. You keep access until the end of the period you've paid for.

How do I get a refund?

Apple handles all payments, so refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. We can't issue them ourselves.

I subscribed but the app still asks me to subscribe.

Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID you subscribed with, and that you're online. Then open the subscription screen and tap Restore purchases. If that doesn't help, email us with your user ID.

Can I use one subscription on several devices?

Yes, on any device signed in to the same Apple ID. Family Sharing isn't supported. The fair-use limit applies to the subscription as a whole, not per device.

Registry data

Where does the information come from?

From the public sex offender registries run by each US state, collected by our data provider. Each profile links to the person's page on the official state registry, which is always the authoritative source.

How current is it?

Registries are refreshed nightly by our provider, and ThreatMap saves search results for up to 30 days. Someone who moved recently may still appear at an old address, or not appear yet.

A record is wrong. How do I get it fixed?

Only the state registry that published a record can correct it, so contact that registry first. The source is named at the bottom of every profile. You're also welcome to tell us at support@threatmap.app with the person's name and the area you searched, and we'll look into it.

Is it legal to look people up like this?

Yes. States publish this information so the public can see it. Using it to harass, threaten or harm anyone is illegal, though, and so is using it to screen people for jobs, housing, credit or insurance. See our terms.

Privacy

Do I need an account?

No. ThreatMap creates a random, anonymous ID the first time you open it. There's nothing to sign up for.

Do you store my location?

Only rounded: to about 100 m when you search a new area, and to about 7 miles in our usage logs. Never your exact position. Read the privacy policy for details.

How do I delete my data?

Email privacy@threatmap.app with your user ID and we'll delete it within 30 days.

In an emergency, call 911. ThreatMap isn't monitored and can't send help. To report a registered offender who isn't complying with registration, contact your local police or the state registry.
ThreatMap

ThreatMap shows public information from US state sex offender registries. Registry data can be out of date or wrong; the official state registry is authoritative.
